Keeping Your Child’s Eyesight In Focus
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a refractive error that causes distant objects to appear blurry while nearby objects remain clear. The cause of myopia can vary, and it can affect your children from a young age.
Myopia affects nearly 30% of Canadians and can worsen throughout your child’s teenage years as the eye continues to grow. Generally, eyesight will stabilize around age 20.
Myopia is easily diagnosed during a comprehensive eye exam. Your child’s eyes are constantly changing, and uncorrected eye conditions can be detrimental to their social, academic, and developmental well-being.

What Causes Myopia?
Myopia is caused by an error in how light is focused when it enters the eye. In a “normal” eye, the cornea bends the light through the pupil, which directs it to the lens. The lens then focuses the light so it lands on the retina. The retina converts this light to neural signals and sends the information to the brain as clear images.
If the cornea is too steeply curved or the eye is too long, light is focused in front of the retina, making distant objects appear blurry.
The Early Symptoms of Myopia
Recognizing myopia early in your children can be difficult, but some common signs and symptoms to look out for can include:
- Trouble seeing faraway objects
- Needing to squint to see clearly
- Eye strain
- Headaches
If your children bring up these symptoms or you notice them, that can be your sign to schedule an eye exam with our team. We can help you explore different myopia control methods.
How Is Myopia Treated?
There is no cure for myopia, but it can be managed in children with eyeglasses or contact lenses. There are also various methods that are shown to slow the progression of myopia in children. These include:
- Essilor Stellest lens
- Soft bifocal contact lenses
- Topical pharmaceutical drops like atropine
If your child is diagnosed with myopia, please book a time with our team to discuss your child’s options for myopia control. We will perform a full, comprehensive eye exam and go over the best options for you and your child.
