Early Detection & Early Treatment

We use diagnostic technology and trusted methods to get a complete picture of your eyes’ internal and external structures. These methods include optical coherence tomography, fundus photography, non-contact tonometry, Perkins tonometry, and more.

If you have been diagnosed with an eye disease, we provide you with a thorough treatment plan and a recommended schedule for additional appointments.

Common Eye Diseases

We test for a variety of eye conditions and diseases, ranging from minor to severe. These tests look for:

Many people will experience some form of eye problem during their lifetime. Cataracts, AMD, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy are the leading causes of blindness in Canada.

Our Diagnostic Technology

Parkview Optometry is equipped with a range of imaging equipment and diagnostic technology that helps us diagnose and manage common eye diseases and other conditions, such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and AMD.

Our diagnostic technology includes fundus photography, OCT, and more to help our team detect signs of eye disease early. Early detection allows our team to get a head start on preparing a personalized treatment plan for your needs.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) captures detailed cross-sectional images of your retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye. Think of it as a high-resolution map that allows us to see individual layers of retinal tissue and identify potential problems in their earliest stages.

With OCT, we can diagnose and monitor a variety of eye conditions, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.

During your comprehensive eye exam, we may use fundus photographyWith optomap technology, we can capture an ultra-wide view in a single scan, creating a detailed digital image of the back of your eye, revealing the retina, optic nerve, and macula.

This internal picture provides invaluable information about your eye health, allowing us to detect potential issues like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy early on when treatment is most effective.

Non-contact (or air-puff) tonometry does not touch your eye but uses a puff of air to flatten your cornea. While there are other more accurate forms of tonometry, it is often used as a simple way to check for high IOP and is the easiest way to test children. This type of tonometry does not use numbing eye drops

Perkins tonometry uses a gentle tap on the eye with a small probe to measure IOP. This method eliminates the discomfort associated with traditional air puff tests, making it ideal for patients of all ages, especially those who find the air puff unpleasant.

Preventing Eye Diseases

The best thing you can do to protect your eye health is to get regular comprehensive eye exams following the frequency recommended by your optometrist.

It’s also important to know if you’re at risk. Those with a family history of eye disease, who are over 50, or who are overweight are more likely to develop eye disease. If you have another health condition, like diabetes, high blood pressure, or autoimmune disease, you’re at higher risk as well.

If you have any complicated health conditions, it’s important you manage your condition and undergo annual eye exams to monitor your eyes for changes related to it.

Daily Preventive Steps

Making healthy lifestyle choices can go a long way to protecting your eyes and lowering your risk for developing many health issues:

  • Eat healthy foods, including dark, leafy greens like spinach and foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon or tuna.
  • Stay active. Exercise can help lower your risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
  • Quit or don’t start smoking. Smoking is harmful to your overall health. It can also increase your risk of developing macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma.
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV radiation. If you’re unsure about choosing the right sunglasses, we can help!
  • Wear protective eyewear during activities like extreme sports, home repairs, or while at work. Safety eyewear protects your eyes from damage and injury.
  • If you wear contact lenses, make sure you’re taking the appropriate steps to prevent eye infections. Wash your hands before you touch your lenses, and always disinfect and properly store your contact lenses between uses.

The best way to protect your eyes from various eye diseases is to undergo routine eye exams. We offer specialty exams tailored to the unique needs of all our patients.
